Honoring our military
Proud to be an American
Eleven months ago, Ben Eberle and his family moved into their new “smart home” on Devil’s Lake in Alpena County.
Eberle, a Mio native, enlisted in the U.S. Army just after high school. He attained the rank of staff sergeant when he was injured in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device while on a mission in 2011, and had to have a triple amputation, both legs above the pelvis and his right arm.
The Eberles received the 50th smart home built in the country by the Stephen Sillers Tunnels to Towers Foundation, a group aimed at providing handicapped accessible homes to American war veterans.
Eberle is just one of millions of Americans who are or have been in the military serving our country and protecting our way of life. Today, The News publishes its annual salute to military personnel, Proud to be an American. We hope you will spend a few minutes and look through to see the men and women, who like Ben Eberle, have put their lives on the line for all Americans.
