Full schedule of Memorial Day weekend actitivies in Presque Isle

There are multitudes of Memorial Day events in Presque Isle County this weekend. Memorial Day services will include different observances from different communities.

The Posen VFW Post 7804 services will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Casimir Church. The procession will continue to other churches, except for St. Paul Lutheran Church. At the different stops there will be grave services, readings, a gun salute and Taps played.

In Rogers City the Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday.

The parade route will follow tradition and will travel along Third Street to the front of the war memorials. The procession then will travel to Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Onaway VFW Post 5857 parade will begin at 12 p.m. at the hall. The parade will travel to city hall where there will be a ceremony on the lawn.

Throughout the weekend different events will take place at the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse Open House.

The open house takes place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdy and Sunday, a maritime concert will take place from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday at the lighthouse. The event is free and the lighthouse is located seven miles north of Rogers City. There will be crafts, tours, demonstrations and music.

Purple Martin Mania begins at 2 p.m. Saturday with sidewalk chalk art at Domaci Art Gallery. Then at 8 p.m. there will be a dance at the beach pavillion, face painting and an art contest. The event is to raise money for Purple Martin, a nonprofit group that specializes in summer camp for foster care children and other youths.

On Sunday there will be the Blessing of the Bikes at 11 a.m. at the Grand Lake Chapel, 8025 E. Grand Lake Road, Presque Isle.

Light Up the Sky 5K will begin at 9 a.m Sunday at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse, 4500 E. Grand Lake Road, Presque Isle. The cost is $20 or $15 for people under the age of 12 years old. The money raised from the run will go toward the fireworks at the the Presque Isle Harbor on July 4.

Throughout the weekend there will be a chance for people to help clean up Camp Chickagami, 6952 Kauffman Road, Presque Isle.

Camp Director McKenzie Bade said in exchange for free rustic cabin accommodations people can help clean up the camp in preparation for the 2017 season.

“All skill sets are welcome as there are jobs for everyone,” she said. “We will be painting, gardening, cleaning, building and many other things to get the camp open and ready to welcome campers for our 88th year of summer camping. There will also be time to hike, campfires and lots of good food. Work begins Friday morning through Monday afternoon. All ages are welcome, individuals under 18 should have a guardian with them.”

Some local students also will have the opportunity to celebrate graduation this weekend.

Onaway Area Public Schools will have its high school graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at the school.
