Friends of Ocqueoc Outdoor Center look to new improvements

ROGERS CITY — Plans for the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center have changed.

“The grant we were going after can’t be used for fixing the roof,” said Presque Isle County Commissioner Lee Gapczynski.

Gapczynski is on the Friends of Ocqueoc Outdoor Center board as well.

The group was about to move forward on a grant application to fix the roof of the center. In January the commissioners approved the use of $1,500 from the center’s budget to use toward a grant application. The grant they will apply for is a Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport Grant. The maximum a group can apply for is $75,000 which includes a 25 percent match.

While they worked on the application — with the help of Northeast Michigan Council of Governments — they discovered to repair the roof is considered a maintenance cost, not a capital improvement, he said.

He said they still will pursue the grant, they will just use the funds for something different.

“So we prioritized other projects,” he said. “Fix or restore the storage garage. Number two would be a pavilion and fire pit. Three would be to add sidewalks and ramps to make them ADA compliant.”
