Atlanta again votes not to renew super’s contract

ATLANTA — After another vote, the Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education voted to not renew the district’s superintendent employment contract during Monday’s meeting.

In November the outgoing board voted not to renew the contract of Superintendent Don Haskin by a 4-2 margin. Board member Michael Talbot requested the item be reconsidered with the new board during February’s meeting.

The motion made by Talbot and seconded by board President Dave Fisher for a one year extension, undergo the required superintendent evaluation training and then conduct the evaluation.

After each board member was afforded the opportunity to discuss their position, the vote was again 4-2 with only Talbot and Fisher voting in favor of renewing the contract. Board member Heather Faircloth was absent for the vote.

“Obviously there was differing views,” Fisher said. “But the board conducted themselves in a professional manner which was very commendable since there were strong feelings on both sides.”

Haskin will remain superintendent until June 30 when his contract expires.

The board will meet again today for a workshop to discuss the upcoming superintendent search.

Multiple attempts to reach Haskin for comment were unsuccessful.
