ALPENA — After its donations of athletic shoes to the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District, Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet was recognized with the Great Start Family Friendly Business Award.

Before the 2016-17 school year began, the AMA ESD sought out donations for athletic shoes for young students within the district. The community answered the call and nearly 150 preschool to fifth grade students received new shoes for the school year.

Great Start Collaborative Coordinator Angie Bruning explained to business officials the reasoning behind selecting Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet.

“This is for your incredibly generous donation to our Shoe Palooza program,” she said presenting the plaque to the business. “Not only did you donate funds but you delivered them right to the AMA and took those direct request for kids whose families had called in, so we wanted to recognize you.”

The quarterly award looks to recognize area businesses that contribute to the many different programs, such as Shoe Palooza, the group undertakes. This is the second year in a row Cliff Anschuetz has donated to the program.

Moreover, the business also has donated school supplies, backpacks and winter gear for local schools over the years. Bruce Anschuetz said he was trying to give back to his community.

“We always try to give back to our community,” Anschuetz said. “It’s been good to us so we want to be good to them.”

Jamie Anschuetz-Gohlke said when she presented her father with the list of students who requested new shoes his reply was to get shoes for all of them.

Bruning said while other area businesses were in the running for the award, the Great Start Collaborative Steering Committee selected Cliff Anschuetz because of the overwhelming support and help it has given.

The feedback from support staff at local schools that have received the shoes said the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, Bruning said. She said for some students it has been their first new pair of shoes and they were full of smiles and gratitude.

The Great Start Family Friendly Business Award accepts nominations for any business located within the AMA ESD area that has helped to make the community a better place for children and families in the school district. This can include volunteering employees, financial donations or having a family friendly business environment.

The awards are given out on a quarterly basis and anyone can nominate a business. If you would like to nominate a business you can visit the AMA ESD’s website at www.amagreatstart4kids.org/business-awards.
