First Federal Community Foundation helps Sunrise Mission

ALPENA — The First Federal Community Foundation presented a $500 grant to the Sunrise Mission of Alpena this week as one of its fourth quarter grant recipients. The $500 will go toward purchasing new carpeting for the facility.

The Sunrise Mission, a 33 bed homeless shelter, serving Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties, services approximately 250-300 people per year. The current carpeting is 10 years old and has received a lot of wear and tear.

“The carpet is basically worn out,” explained Mission Director John Ritter. “We serve the poorest people in our community. Having decent, clean accommodations here helps us serve in a respectful manner.”

The total cost of the project will be approximately $3,500, with the rest of the funds coming from the Mission’s general fund. “Any help is appreciated,” said Ritter.
