ATLANTA — The Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education elected its board officers including President Dave Fisher during Monday’s organizational meeting.

With the newly elected board members Tom Morton and Heather Faircloth present, Superintendent Don Haskin began by accepting nominations for board president.

Board member Doris Smith nominated Dave Fisher which was followed by Toni Crager nominating Amy Corbin. Corbin then nominated Morton who said he respectfully declined the nomination leaving Fisher and Corbin.

After the board voted on both nominees, Fisher was selected by a 4-3 vote. Fisher, who was the previous board president, said he had some doubts about whether or not he was going to be considered for the position.

“I have mixed feeling,” he said following the meeting. “I appreciate the opportunity to serve and really I came in here not real sure whether to let me name stand. But I will do my best to set a fair and even playing field for everyone involved.”

Board members also selected Morton as vice president, Smith as secretary and Faircloth as board treasurer.

When deciding which legal firm would represent the district, Crager asked that the law firm be bidded out like the board does with other services contracted by the district. Haskin said he was uncomfortable without legal representation if not approved and was extremely happy with the services provided by the firm that has represented the district for well over a decade.

Haskin told board members the firm has provided the district with free services and counseling through the years that could have cost the district several thousands of dollars.

After discussing the matter the board voted to continue its service with Thrun Law Firm but to bid out the process for the following year.

In other business:

∫ the board approved the payments of bills for $436,120.20.

∫ the school’s cafeteria received a grant for the purchase of a 60 inch TV that will be used for wireless programming, posting game events, snap pictures, student council updates, student body information and learning how to give Powerpoint presentations.

∫ teacher Kris Mayville was awarded the Huskie Paw for recently coordinating the district’s testing.
