Alcona school board elects new officers

LINCOLN — The Alcona Community Schools Board of Education began the first meeting of 2017 with an organizational meeting that resulted in a new board president and other positions during a meeting held Monday.

The meeting started with the swearing in of two new members, board members Warren MacNeill and Brandon Schroeder, as well as re-elected members Vice President Gary Sims and Steven Yokum.

MacNeill and Schroeder both won four-year terms in the November election. Yokum and Sims were re-elected for six-year terms.

After the swearing-in ceremony, Superintendent Shawn Thornton asked for the election of officers for the new board.

After the request acting Vice President Gary Sims nominated Dr. Ken Chamberlain as the president. There were no other nominations for president of the board, and a unanimous vote to appoint Chamberlain was conducted appointing him as president. Chamberlain was the board’s former secretary.

Next, with Chamberlain in the president’s seat, nominations for vice president were solicited by the new president

Treasurer Joel Blohm nominated Sims to be reappointed as the board vice president and there were no other nominations. A vote to appoint Sims as vice president was unanimous and he retained his previous position.

Next Chamberlain asked for nominations for the position of secretary. Blohm nominated board member Chad Spitznagel for the job. There were no other nominations, and the vote to appoint him was unanimous.

Finally, Sims nominated Blohm to retain his treasurer seat, and there were no other nominations for treasurer. The vote was unanimous.

After the organizational meeting Sims took a moment to recognize outgoing board President Mark Feldhiser who did not run in the November election.

During the ceremony Sims recognized Feldhiser for his time and work as a school board member.

“Seven of those years you were board president,” he said. “You provided leadership and guidance and on behalf of the board we recognize you.”
