Knapweed pull Aug. 9

The 8th Annual Weed Pull on Island Park is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 9.

Every year, members of the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary and volunteers of all ages gather on top of the island at Duck Park to pull the invasive plant Spotted Knapweed.

Years of removing this plant has given a variety of other plants a chance to grow there and increase biodiversity. Plant identification and instructions will be given before collecting.

North Country Candy and Gifts, co-sponsor of the weed pull, is offering buy one, get one free ice cream cones for all participants.

Bags will be provided for collecting plants. Participants may wish to bring garden gloves to protect hands, sunscreen, water and a hat.
