Katie Schultz leads program at Lions Club

Katie Schultz, a member of the U.S. Peace Corps and a resident of Alpena, provided the program at last week’s Alpena Lions Club meeting. She described her more than two years of service in the African country of Ghana, using a PowerPoint presentation. President Mike Centala was program chair for the meeting.

Schultz described the area in which she served: it is in the northern part of Ghana, which borders on the Atlantic Ocean and is just south of the Sahara Desert. She was located in a huge, dry grasslands area in a farming community.

She organized projects involving obtaining and handling water, providing sanitation, training people to work together for the good of their community, and helping them grow vegetables, etc.

Schultz also led people in raising and using bees, and in planting trees. Some of these projects required preparing grant applications, which she did for them. Schultz reported that in her second year of service, electric power came to the community; this changed the lives of everyone in that community.

Also noted at the meeting, Bernie Lamp III reported on Lions Club activities at a recent Good Morning Alpena breakfast, sponsored by the Alpena Chamber of Commerce.
