Dr. Tony and Carla Skiba Endowed Scholarship Fund established through ACC Foundation

Following their high school graduation, Anthony (Tony) Skiba and Carla (Clark) Skiba enrolled in Alpena Community College. Tony began in 1963 and focused his studies on science and biology courses as he was interested in pursuing a profession in either the medical or dental field. In 1964, Carla began her academic career at ACC and she attended for two years.

Tony received an Associate in Science/General Science Degree in 1965 from ACC and transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., to complete his under graduate degree. The Skiba family has a long history in the dental profession and that inspired Tony to pursue a career in dentistry. He graduated from the Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1971 and returned to Alpena to practice.

For more than 40 years, Tony has had a successful career at Downtown Dentistry where he continues to enjoy the one-on-one interaction with his patients. He admits that much has changed since he began his practice, including better treatment options, technology and innovations in dentistry.

As busy as Tony’s dental practice is, he has found time to give back to the community and has belonged to numerous organizations over the years. Carla also has served on numerous boards and has volunteered for many organizations.

In October 2016 Tony and Carla celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple has four adult children: Tony, Todd, Lisa Skiba Beatty and Lindsey Skiba Natzel. They also have eight grandchildren.

Tony said, “Without the start of my education at ACC that pushed me to my future in dentistry, none of this would be possible.”

This scholarship serves as a thank you from Tony and Carla, and they want to provide financial assistance to students who are pursuing a career in dentistry or medicine.
