Wildlife Sanctuary Board announces coordinator for Artist in Residence

Mark Beins, artist and teacher, was welcomed as the new coordinator for the Wildlife Sanctuary Board’s Artist in Residence program when the board met for its March 16 meeting. Beins reported on his contacts so far and on his future plans. He already has made many contacts, including university art faculties, to recruit a professional who has had quality work exhibited in galleries. The summer Artist in Residence program offers free lodging of one or two weeks in exchange for a water-themed work of art to hang in the proposed River Center building.

Beins has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Drawing from Wayne State University. His varied career includes graphics production and photography in industry, and teaching assistantships in many colleges and schools. His artwork is displayed in several states, from Ohio to Alaska, and in Saudi Arabia and Guam.

The Wildlife Sanctuary Board also discussed the opening on the board for a city resident interested in working with the Wildlife Sanctuary and Island Park. Anyone interested should contact city hall at 356-1700 for an application form.

Terry Gougeon reported on the birdhouses on Island Park. Of the eight bird houses for tree swallows put up by Cub Scouts several years ago, there are three remaining. Gougeon will take care of needed repairs. Other maintenance needs were also noted.

In other business, the Reel Fun Ice Fishing Tournament was a success again this year, with 15 inches of ice on Grand Lake in spite of thawing temperatures. The ice fishing tournament is the major fundraiser for the River Center and attracts fisher people from several states. This year it raised $9,000. The Festivus party meal the night before was also successful, with a profit of $3,200.

Chairman Roger Witherbee reported that the fundraising campaign committee of the River Center Board is working with a GANTT chart and also developing a promotional video.
