Language Society Folk Tales event Dec. 7 at ACC

The Language Society of Alpena Community College is organizing “An Evening of Tales from around the World,” to be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at ACC’s Granum Theatre.

Group members will speak on a number of topics related to culture and welcome community members to share international stories from the land of their ancestors. In particular, the group would like to hear tales about life from people who have knowledge of other countries, whether the tale has been passed down from generation to generation, or is first-hand knowledge. Anyone willing should submit his or her tale to Dr. Karol Walchak, who will coordinate the speakers.

All members of the community and outlying areas are invited to attend. If you know people who have tales to tell and cannot present the stories themselves, feel free to speak for them.

The goal of this events is to hear people relate tales that have a cultural impact, including folk tales, myths, personal experiences, stories from outside the United States. Idioms, songs (such as Happy Birthday in a native tongue), cliches, and slang would also be appropriate topics. These stories need not be firsthand but may have been handed down from ancestors. The older, the better.

Those who feel intimidated by going on stage might consider having a relative or friend do the speaking/singing for them. Speakers are welcome to bring handouts.

The Language Society will be holding a bake sale and selling refreshments.

All proceeds will go toward a 2019 trip to Europe for ACC students.
