Start off this festive season with the Alpena Symphony Orchestra concert, “A Holiday Celebration,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at Alpena High School Auditorium.

Assisting the ASO in this kick-off to the holidays will be the Besser Male Chorus, under the direction of MaryAnn Hubbard with Suelyn Bartz as accompanist, and the Alpena High School Women’s Chorale, normally directed by Jean Brown-Baker. Nancy Everett, retired Alpena vocal music teacher, will direct the Women’s Chorale in this evening’s performance.

The ASO is directed by the Novi High School Director of Orchestras, Jim VanEizenga.

Arrive early to hear the pre-concert documentary by VanEizenga, and stay after the concert for a sale of handmade Christmas ornaments and a punch and cookie reception, both in the high school lobby.

Music for this program will be holiday favorites from past December performances, and these new selections: “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed, and Concert Suite from “The Polar Express” by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard.

Each chorus will perform three selections as an individual chorus and then will perform the final set of music as a combined choir with the orchestra.

These selections include: “A Candlelight Carol” by John Rutter, “Hallelujah Chorus” by G.F. Handel and “A Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson.

Tickets are $10 for adults, with no charge for students and children. Buy tickets in advance at Neiman’s Family Market, or at the door.

The ASO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
