League of Women Voters to host discussion of two millage renewals

Alpena Community College and Alpena County Youth and Recreation Renewal proposals on the Aug. 7 primary election ballot will be discussed from 6-8 p.m. on July 24. The presentation will be in the ACC Center Building, Room 106.

The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Alpena County.

Max Lindsay, retired ACC staff member who is a member of Citizens for ACC, will present information about the college millage renewal request. Information about the County Youth and Recreation millage renewal proposal will be presented by a panel composed of representatives of various groups that have received funds in the past, including Mark Kinney of Alpena County Plaza Pool, Dr. David Meinhardt of Northern Lights Arena, Lee Grant of Huron Shores Little League and Earl Martin of Alpena County Parks. Speakers will also answer questions from the audience.

The league is supporting these two ballot issues, based on past studies and member-agreed-on positions. However, they do not take action on issues they have not studied. The league also continues its 97-year-old non-partisan tradition of neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties.

The league’s mission at local, state and national levels states: “The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”
