Zonta Club awards five college scholarships

The Zonta Club of Alpena hosted the 2018 Zonta Scholarship recipients at its June 7 meeting. The club offers scholarships for women continuing on with their educational aspirations immediately following high school graduation.

In addition, the club offers “non-traditional” student scholarships for those who have been out of school for a minimum of five years, and who are attending Alpena Community College to begin or further their vocational goals.

The scholarships are funded by the club’s multiple fundraising efforts conducted throughout the year.

The following individuals received scholarships for the 2018-19 academic year:

∫ Elizabeth Thomson received a scholarship for an AHS senior attending a four-year college or university immediately following graduation. She plans to attend Michigan State University in the fall where she will pursue studies in environmental science with a career goal of environmental lobbyist.

∫ Hailey Boyk received a scholarship for an AHS senior attending a four-year college or university immediately following graduation. She plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall where she will pursue a course of study in microbiology with a career goal of pathologist.

∫ Madison Murphy received the Zonta Scholarship for an AHS senior attending ACC on a full-time basis immediately following graduation. She plans to pursue general science studies at ACC with an ultimate goal of a career in the medical field.

∫ Amanda Boyat received a Zonta ACC non-traditional student scholarship award. She is currently enrolled on a full-time basis in the ACC LPN nursing program. Following completion of the LPN program, she plans to continue on to the RN program at ACC.

∫ Nancy Frary received a Zonta ACC non-traditional student scholarship award. She is currently enrolled as a full-time student at ACC in the business administration assistant program which she feels will broaden her career opportunities.

Zonta Club of Alpena was chartered in 1963 and over its 55-year history, the club has remained committed to providing scholarship opportunities to area women. Zonta is an international service organization that strives to empower and enrich the lives of women in the community and worldwide through education, service, advocacy and financial support.
