TBAC Chorus to present Springsong

Thunder Bay Arts Council Chorus will welcome a belated 2018 spring season with a concert Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. The event, Springsong, will feature complementary pairings of verse and music for spring.

Poetry selections sourced in Northeast Michigan as well as selections by William Shakespeare, Robert Frost and Sara Teasdale will complement musical selections and texts by composers of several periods from the 16th century to modern show tunes, and recent compositions from the United States and Europe.

This concert will be dedicated Jim Hart, the long-time director of the chorus who passed away on Jan. 31. Springsong is designed to provide a welcome breath of fresh spring air following a winter that missed its exit cue across the region by several weeks.

All readings will be presented by Bill Powell of Alpena, and will range from local poetry about Presque Isle to Shakespeare, Frost and Teasdale.

Musical selections run from Kirby Shaw’s vocal jazz arrangement of “Now Is the Month of Maying” to Craig Courtney’s recently composed “I Will Remember You.” A special 2015 composition by young Norwegian Kim Andre Arneson, “Flight Song,” with words by Welshman Euan Tait, will also be presented along with a strong variety of selections for the season, including music from “Carousel.”

Buying tickets in advance for the May 6 concerts is both easy and recommended. Advance adult tickets are two for $25 or $15 each at the door. As always, children and students will be admitted free of charge.

Advance discounted tickets may be obtained through the Thunder Bay Arts Council’s website, www.thunderbayarts.org or at Neiman’s Family Market. Admission is also available to holders of 2017-18 TBArts Passes.
