Lions learn about Antique Tractor & Steam Engine Club

Mike Centala provided the program for his Alpena Lions Club at last week’s club meeting. He screened a video which he and his wife Mary had produced recently about the Alpena Antique Tractor & Steam Engine Club. The video opened with views of a number of existing old steam-engine tractors.

Next the video reviewed the history of the tractor club. It was founded some years ago at Rockport, but only remained there a few years. The club then purchased 35 acres on French Road, and began construction of a clubhouse and a barn. This construction and numerous other projects on the property were undertaken by volunteers and families working together. A non-profit, tax free organization was formed. Grain was planted in the fields and is to this day harvested by the antique tractors.

The club, about to celebrate its 35th anniversary, provides lunches, suppers, chicken dinners, entertainment and demonstrations. They also provide give-a-ways and sell pumpkins. They make soup and operate a flea market. The clubhouse and barn are available to rent for weddings and reunions. There are presently about 40 members in the club.

PDG Dave Zeller and President Scott Forerstner announced to the Lions that a raffle will soon be starting. This raffle will replace the Lions fruit sale.
