Students in The Language Society of Alpena Community College recently began the first of many fundraising events. Several members of the group coordinated a bottle drive and raised $300 for the society.

The students gratefully accepted donations from ACC faculty and staff as well as community members who donated to the cause.

The next bottle drive will happen after the new year on Jan. 6 starting at 11 a.m. For anyone who has bottles to be picked up earlier, TLS members will be happy to stop by. Otherwise, they plan opening a number of drop-off sites (including the ACC campus near the main entrance sign) as well as driving to pick up refundable bottles and cans with door-to-door service.

They are hoping that if interested community members have returnables, they will contact Dr. Walchak, adviser to The Language Society, at walchakk@alpenacc.edu.

The students are working toward a 2019 trip to visit central European cities that will involve a search for links to their ancestry. Berlin, Prague, Krakow and Budapest are four cities on the itinerary.

Other upcoming fundraisers will include an evening of tales from around the world, a poetry slam and baked good battles.

“This will be The Language Society’s second trip to Europe,” said Walchak. “The opportunity to travel is life changing. As well, we are bringing back our experiences from around the world to the people of Alpena and the surrounding communities.”

As part of their membership, students will be working on foreign languages and studies of culture in addition to their travels.
