New Wildlife Sanctuary Board chair elected

Board member Terry Gougeon was elected chairman of the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary Board at its December meeting. Gougeon has served on the board for several years, and has extensive experience in Island Park maintenance. In January he will begin his chairmanship, replacing Roger Witherbee.

Witherbee will remain on the board and continue to serve as the chairman of the Thunder Bay River Center Board. Secretary Judy Kalmanek was elected to continue serving as secretary which involves not only taking minutes but also maintaining records.

Gougeon reported for himself and Elizabeth Littler on Island Park maintenance accomplished in the past year. Projects accomplished included: trail and stairway cleanup; trail barking; refurbishing birdhouses; blocking a cross-through trail and installing “Not a Trail” signs; removing invasives (spotted knapweed and autumn olive); and re-installing the new tree identification signs.

Other business included an announcement that the Reel Fun Ice Fishing Tournament fundraiser will take place on Feb. 24, with the Festivus fun dinner the night before on Feb. 23. Amber Stokes, a member of the TBRC marketing committee, is managing the Ice Fishing Tournament website and the corresponding Facebook pages. Also announced was that income from Giving Tuesday was $2,960 for the River Center.
