Besser Male Chorus to give four holiday concerts

Besser Male Chorus is set to perform its traditional Christmas Concert schedule with a variety of music both old and new. In an attempt to make a concert available to everyone, the chorus will perform four concerts this season.

The first event will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at New Beginnings Church, located at the corner of County Roads 459 and 624 in Hillman.

The second performance is set for Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Alpena.

Ossineke will be the setting for the third concert on Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Ossineke United Methodist Church.

The final performance will take place Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alpena.

Each concert will consist of three sets of songs from the chorus, a short set of songs sung by a quartet and an instrumental interlude to add spice to the program. Some selections are traditional favorites of the chorus and its patrons while other selections are being performed for the first time.

The chorus is under the leadership of MaryAnn Hubbard for her first season as its full time conductor. The chorus had a challenging year when its past director, Bunny Lyon, lost her battle with cancer. Hubbard has been a part of the chorus as a flautist and has taken the reins of this rowdy bunch of guys with great enthusiasm.

The members of the chorus have enjoyed working with Hubbard in putting these performances together and hope that the patrons of the concerts will welcome her in her new role as director.

Assisting in creating a wonderful production is the talented Suelyn Bartz on keyboard. Several of the selections showcase her artistry in music. Additionally, one of the songs was composed by Bartz.

Judith Case has joined the chorus this season, adding her skills on the flute to several numbers. Rounding out the group this season is Avery Aten playing percussion on selected numbers.

Each performance is by free will donation to help support the chorus throughout the year. The chorus is always interested in new membership and would like to talk to anyone who might want to join.

As a group, members enjoy singing and putting a quality performance together. Anyone interested can call 464-7464.
