Flag retirement ceremony planned on Veterans Day

A flag retirement ceremony will be held Saturday in recognition of Veterans Day. The event is planned for 5:30 p.m. at Optimist Acres, corner of M-32 and Herron Road.

Conducting the ceremony will Boy Scout Troop 92, chartered by St. Paul Lutheran Church and led by Scout Master Chris Harsch. Between 500 and 1,000 flags gathered by the local VFW, American Legion and the Boy Scouts are expected.

The retirement will be a clean fire in accordance with US Code 10 concerning worn and faded American flags no longer fit for service. The first hundred will be folded and burned in a solemn manner with salutes and honors as part of the ceremony.

All are welcome to attend and bring their own flags for disposal. The ceremony also will consist of the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, short homily, singing of the National Anthem, setting of the Honor Guard, “Taps” and retreat.
