Alpena Garden Club meeting hosted at mall by Doug Pratt
The Nov. 6 meeting of the Alpena Garden Club was held at the Alpena Mall meeting room, where 43 members and the speaker were guests of Doug Pratt. The monthly host committee provided desserts and door prizes. The travel prizes were Irish teas from Ireland and maple syrup from Canada.
Marilyn Ross, co-president, called the meeting to order and thanked the committee members: Marian Anderson, Ann Speaks, Bonnie Plowman and Joanne Dubey. Judy Kalmanek, the guest speaker from the board of the future Thunder Bay River Center, was introduced next.
A PowerPoint presentation followed on the progress to date and features of the future facility. Plans include exhibits of live species of fish, plants and other animals of the watershed. Funding for the project was explained and an information pamphlet plus other materials were distributed.
The purpose of the facility and its educational programs is to preserve the vast Thunder Bay Watershed and to recognize its importance to the region.
Jacinta Boyk confirmed that there will be a new garden site on the list next spring: the boat harbor flag pole.
Newly elected officers are President Kaye Breckenridge, Co-Vice Presidents Jacinta Boyk and Bonnie Plowman, Treasurer Marian Anderson and Secretary Catherine Steadman to be assisted by Doloris Law and Patti Martinez.
A vote to hold another Garden Walk in July 2018 was taken and approved.
The next meeting will be the annual Christmas party and luncheon on Dec. 4 at the Ramada Inn.
