LWV sponsors candidate forum and jail questions
A candidate forum for the two seats on the Alpena City Council and a question and answer session about the jail millage proposal will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 25 at Alpena Community College’s Granum Theater. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Alpena County, the program will begin with a brief review of the Nov. 7 ballot proposal for a millage for a new county jail, followed by questions from the audience.
Next, candidates for Alpena City Council will give introductory and closing statements and answer questions written from the audience. Standard league procedures will be followed with time-limited responses.
The only name printed on the ballot is incumbent Cindy Johnson. Write-in candidates include Amber Hess, Rick Rafferty, Calvin Howard and Thomas VanDuinen. The deadline for write-in candidates to turn in their paperwork to the Alpena City Clerk isn’t until Oct. 27, so there may be other write-in candidates participating. A sample ballot will be available for people to view.
The moderator will be league member Lisa Hilberg. The public is invited. The league neither supports nor opposes any candidate or political party.
