Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan announces grant cycle changes now in effect

The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan announces a change to its grant cycles effective Oct. 1, taking its Community Impact grant from three annual grant cycles to two per year.

“Community Impact grants are among the most important grants the foundation gives back to Northeast Michigan,” said CFNEM Executive Director Patrick Heraghty. “Because these grants allow us to address our communities’ most pressing needs as they change year to year, we expect this shift to two deadlines to result in larger grant amounts that will provide a more significant impact on the region we serve.”

The CFNEM Board of Trustees approved a new strategic plan on Sept. 14, 2017. Heraghty said part of that plan includes streamlining the current grant process, adding an additional staff person and realigning current positions, as well as future development of a strategic grantmaking focus.

“There is a lot of need locally for our nonprofits to continue doing what they do, and funds are needed to enhance their services as well,” said Heraghty. “As we move forward in planning, our board is committed to making sure we do all we can for the organizations, donors and Northeast Michigan residents we serve.”

Heraghty said nonprofit representatives who are familiar with CFNEM’s grants will notice that mini-grant applications are no longer available. While nonprofits may still request smaller amounts (any amount up to $5,000), all requests will use the same application.

The new grant deadline structure for CFNEM, covering Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties, is as follows:

∫ Community Impact Grant deadlines: Jan. 15 and July 15

∫ Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council Grants: Jan. 15 and Oct. 15

∫ NE MI Women’s Giving Circle Grants: July 1

If a grant deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is the first regular business day following the normal deadline. The next opportunity for submitting grant applications is through the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC). Applications are available at and are due by Oct. 16.
