The Alpena Community College Foundation announced that Mary Benton of Alpena was recently awarded the newly established Dr. Richard and Mrs. Sharon Lessard Medical Assistant Scholarship.

As a non-traditional student, Benton enrolled in ACC’s Medical Assistant Program in 2014. She has been employed at Alpena General Hospital (now MidMichigan Health – Alpena) for 17 years. For the past eight years she has worked the afternoon shift as an Emergency Room registration clerk.

This $2,000 scholarship will assist Benton in achieving her academic goals of becoming a medical assistant and she will graduate in May 2018 with a Medical Assistant-Associate in Applied Science Degree.

ACC’s Medical Assistant Program prepares students for employment in physicians’ offices, medical clinics, laboratories and other facilities – both medical and administrative positions. For more information about this program contact Medical Assistant Program Director Kimberly Salziger at 358-7341.
