Brush Creek Mill to feature Allan James Grund program
HILLMAN – Brush Creek Mill will be open Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. during Hillman’s V-J Day celebration. The mill will be featuring a World War II military display, along with lawn games, a water balloon challenge and a putting contest.
At 7 p.m., Allan James Grund will present his original work, “Two Soldiers, Reflections on the War Between the States,” with narration by Jodene Compton.
“This is the finest work Al has done,” said Edith Lennox, coordinator at the mill.
Through his original songs, Grund tells stories of individuals, heroes, villains, battles and brothers. His song, “Gettysburg,” was featured in a North Carolina student-created movie called “A Nation Divided.”
“I don’t know if this is his finest work – he has so many fine works – but it is an outstanding piece of work,” said Kathy Stevens, facilitator of the Brush Creek Writers. “I have copies of the CDs, and am enthralled by the history and the poignancy of the Civil War as Allan presents it. It was a war that divided our countries and families. It was a war of heroism on both sides and horrible death on both sides.”
Grund is recognized in Northeast Michigan as a poet, playwright, actor, singer/songwriter, musician and lecturer on the subject of the American Civil War. He is also an award-winning short story author.
This past spring Grund performed his one-man show, “Fast Water Over Slippery Rock,” at Thunder Bay Theatre. He will be acting in his play, “The Big House at Holy Hollow,” this fall.
In addition, he is the creator of nine CDs of original music, 10 books of poetry, prose and short stories, seven original works for the stage and numerous concert shows.
The doors at Brush Creek Mill open on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited, so guests are advised to come a bit early.
Tickets are $10 and available in advance by calling 742-2527 or at the door. This event is a fundraiser for Brush Creek Mill.
