Garden Club enjoys program on Rockport
The recent May luncheon of the Alpena Garden Club held at the 19th Hole was attended by 30 members and one guest. Co-President Marilyn Ross thanked the host committee of Marilyn Bloomberg, Cathy Cathers, Linda Fogland, Lynda Russell and Pam Hand.
The guest speaker was Carol Dodge Grohowski from the Friends of Rockport Association, who spoke about Rockport State Park and its many unique natural and historical features.
It encompasses an old quarry, Besser Bell fishing village, 13 sinkholes, several bat hibernacula and many endangered wildflowers.
Last year the park was designated a Dark Sky Park and has partnered on programs with the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan. In the future there will be maps and trail markers for visitors who do need a park pass to enter.
Marilyn Bloomberg gave the 5 Minute Garden Talk on landscaping with desert plants to use less water.
Coming up is the Spring Plant Sale on Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon in the First Baptist Church parking lot.
The June 5 meeting will begin with a lunch at 11 a.m. at the 19th Hole, followed by a field trip to Presque Isle Farm.
