ASO to perform Spring Serenade

Alpena Symphony Orchestra has prepared a Spring Serenade musical event for the community’s enjoyment. It will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.

The program opens with the peppy “Piccolo Polka” starring Susan Asher and MaryAnn Hubbard on the piccolos. Joanne Root and Denel Fisher will treat the audience to Joseph Sellner’s “Duo” for flute and clarinet. Following that selection will be a Beethoven violin solo performed by Clare Sullivan.

Three Irish folk songs will be presented by Hubbard playing flute to the tenor vocal lines sung by Jonathon Wegner. An interesting variety of styles and harmonies can be heard with these duets and solo.

Returning to the stage in this concert will be the Thunder Bay Sax Quartet featuring saxophonists Josh Bisanz, Gene Domrase, Matt Bishop and Owen Williams.

Performing Mozart’s “String Quartet No. 2 in D Major” will be Eric Lawson, Joanna VanEizenga, Jim VanEizenga and Cynthia Atkinson.

Hubbard, Cheryl Bates and Isabelle Denstaedt treat the audience to music by Tcherepnin, the “Trio for Three Flutes, Op. 59.”

No serenade concert would be complete without including a number of selections performed by the Alpena String Ensemble, which consists of players from the ASO along with the Alpena String School members. The combination of music performed by all of these different ensembles presents an enjoyable program that is rich in contrast.

There is no admission charge for this concert but donations are always appreciated. A reception will follow the concert in the social hall located downstairs
