Girl Scouts plan many activities for the year

Area Girl Scout leaders met with the Girl Scout Service Unit recently to plan for a number of events in the upcoming months. Activities include information on this year’s 100th anniversary of the sale of the first G.S. cookies.

In honor of the event girls will be offering a new s’mores cookie. Also in January, girls and their family and friends planned to travel to Hillman for a day of rollerskating fun. The active month will end with a workshop for Daisy Girl Scouts on animal tracks, and a nursing exploration event for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts.

February will include a Science Day on Feb. 4 open to both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts at Alpena Community College. There will be troop activities on Feb. 22 to reflect on Girl Scout Thinking Day. Girls can embrace and learn about the diversity of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides worldwide. The month will close with leaders attending a winter retreat.

The month of March marks the Girl Scouts 105th birthday and will include a Girl Scouts Around the World event with a special Girl Scout guest sharing time and stories of what it is like to be a Girl Scout in France.

In April, Girl Scout volunteers and several scouts will be attending the annual corporate meeting of Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore, as well as an adult volunteer awards ceremony.

Girls and leaders from around the council will travel to Alpena in May for the second Girl Scout Camporee for a weekend of outdoor fun with camping, sharing skills and outdoor cooking and nature art sculpture contest.

The busy school year will be followed by a busy school with a two-day pioneer-themed Day Camp on June 28-29.

Volunteers are hoping to organize a large garage sale/book sale for spring or early summer to kick off a capital campaign to raise funds for Camp Woodlands. This Girl Scout camp desperately needs repairs. Leaders and volunteers also are hoping to provide additional upgrades such as handicap accessible access for the building and new accommodations in restrooms and showers, new windows, insulation, siding, heating for bunkroom and new energy efficient fireplace. The building is over 60 years old.

Looking ahead to October, local scouts and volunteers are planning to attend the National Girl Scout Convention being held this year in Ohio. They are hoping to raise funds to help pay for a bus full of participants from the area.

Girls or adults wishing to become Girl Scouts are welcome at any time of the year. You can join by contacting Dani Ayotte at 464-0023. For additional questions regarding Girl Scouts or any of the planned events, contact Donna Precord at 354-5590 or email at AlpenaGirlscouts@aol.com.
