Thunder Bay Saxophone Quartet performing in Michael Moor’s memory

Thunder Bay Saxophone Quartet will perform Saturday at 7 p.m. at House Concerts at the Well. The quartet, which has been performing since 2011, will provide an evening of favorite holiday music, including an assortment of jazz, popular and traditional Christmas music arranged for four saxophones.

During the second half of the program an audience sing-along is planned.

The quartet was founded nearly six years ago by Michael Moors, an Alpena native who taught band and general music in the Alpena Public Schools for over 30 years. He also gave private lessons to scores of young people in Alpena.

Moors was an accomplished clarinetist and saxophonist who was a regular performer in many venues, not only locally but around the state. Sadly, he passed away on Oct. 28. Saturday’s concert is dedicated to his memory and in gratitude for the invaluable contribution he made to promoting music and the arts in the community.

The four saxophonists who will play include Josh Bisanz on soprano saxophone. He has played in Alpena for more than a decade and studied music at both Ferris State University and Western Michigan University.

Gene Domrase will perform on alto saxophone. He is a retired music educator and band director, having taught for over 30 years in Alpena, Hillman and Atlanta.

Matt Bishop, a band director and music teacher in the Grayling Public Schools, will play tenor saxophone.

On baritone saxophone will be Owen Williams, a vocalist by trade who took up saxophone in retirement at Moor’s urging and who has done extensive composing and arranging for the group.

For directions to House Concerts at the Well, call Sue Ellen Jones at 354-4862 or email sueteach7@yahoo.com. A $10 donation will be taken for the musicians.
