Family gives to scholarship honoring loved one

For the second year in a row, in lieu of spending money on each other for Christmas gifts, the family of the late Trooper Larry Forreider contributed $500 for the upcoming academic school year to the scholarship fund that was established in 1975 in Trooper Forreider’s name with the Alpena Community College Foundation.

“This is a way for our family to honor Larry and pay his legacy forward to the next generation of law enforcement officers,” said Betty Thom, former wife of Trooper Forreider. “Next to family, Larry valued the power of education and continued taking classes while working with the Michigan State Police.”

Thom is a resident of Alpena. She and their children, Mark (Judy) Forreider of Denver, Colo., and Lisa Shanley (Greg Midkiff) of Mattawan, made the decision as a family over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Trooper Larry Forreider Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a sophomore student who has successfully completed his/her freshman year at ACC and majoring in law enforcement, and has graduated from a high school in Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency or Presque Isle County. Applicants must demonstrate good citizenship, public service, and moral integrity.
