Elks Lodge #2525 awards $8,500 in scholarships

Tawas Area Elks Lodge #2525 and the Michigan Elks Association recently awarded $8,500 to eight area students as part of the 2015 Most Valuable Student and Community College Scholarship competitions.

The scholarship awards were presented to the students during the Elks Flag Day Ceremony on June 14 at the Iosco County Veterans Recognition Plaza. Assisting with the Flag Day Ceremony were representatives from the Girl Scouts.

The top award in the Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship competition at the national level is a four-year $50,000 scholarship. For the 2015 competition, $2,440,000 was awarded at the national level by the Elks National Foundation, $60,000 at the state level by the Michigan Elks Association, and $5,000 at the local level by the Tawas Area Elks Lodge.

Applications for the 2016 competition will be available online in September atwww.elks.org. All high school seniors who are an American citizen are eligible to apply for an Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship.

This was the first year for the Tawas Elks Community College Scholarship program, which awarded two $750 scholarships to high school seniors eho are attending one of the area’s local community colleges: Alpena Community College, Delta Community College and Kirtland Community College.

Applications for the 2016 Tawas Elks Community College Scholarship will be available in January 2016.
