Lions Club presents awards, installs newly-elected officers

The final meeting of the Alpena Lions Club of the fiscal year was recently celebrated at the Alpena Golf Club and was held in combination with the annual Lions Golf Outing.

The outstanding event of the meeting was the awarding of the Melvin Jones Award to Randy Boboltz, a 13-year member. This award is the highest service award given by Lions international.

Boboltz is a past president of the club, long-serving Old Newsboys Sale chair, unofficial substitute tail twister (who provides the club with weekly jokes), and active participant in many Lions projects. The Melvin Jones Award was presented to Boboltz by Mike Centela. Jamie Boboltz pinned her husband with the award’s lapel pin.

Secretary Pat Hentkowski and Treasurer Mike Hamilton were awarded Lions of Michigan Foundation Awards. Hentkowski has been a Lion for 22 years and has also served as secretary for 22 years. Hamilton has been a Lion for 17 years and served as treasurer for 15 years. They work together as a team handling the finances of the club. These awards were presented by PDG Dave Zeller.

Zeller also installed the club’s newly-elected officers and directors for the coming year. They are: President, Steve Murch; Immediate Past President, Ken Dully; First Vice President, Tom Woizeschke; Second Vice President, Amy Essex; Secretary, Pat Hentkowski; Treasurer, Mike Hamilton; Lion Tamers, Dave Havelock and Tom Shiemke; Tail Twisters, Al Guest and Tom Mullaney; Membership Directors, Lew Kunze, Dennis Bodem, and Zeller; Directors, Nancy Hammond, Brian Wilmont, PDG Bev Bodem and Centela.

Murch’s first official duty as president was to award retiring President Ken Dully his past president’s pin and a plaque honoring his past year of service leading the club.

Bernie Lamp III, chair of the golf outing, reported on the event which took place just prior to the meeting. Lamp noted that the outing included fewer competitive events than past years. However, awards for low-putts were won by Nancy Hammond, Steve Hammond and Billi Murch.
